Reflections on art, politics, parenting, and life in the Midwest

Name: Tess Home: St. Louis

I'm now a graduate student in public health at Washington University in St. Louis... as well as a writer, parent, and teacher. I haven't updated this blog recently, but I may come back to it in the future.

Finally, Some Good News in the Paper

This morning, Tom held out the front page of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch with a smile. More than half the page was devoted to an article about the StudioSTL book anthology project, complete with excerpts of student work and several of Cindy Lappin's beautiful photographs. I was thrilled to see an acknowledgement of this book from the broader St. Louis community; we had promised the kids that people would care about their stories, and the article offered proof. While the front page of the local section showed a more grim side of local schools--the city schools have just been taken over by the state, and the new and old boards have been holding dueling meetings during the appeals process--the article about our students shows that there are young people who are succeeding despite great obstacles.
