Staying together for the sake of...
... the environment?
I found out this morning that my family is environmentally friendly, and not just because we recycle. An intriguing study shows that divorce is bad for the environment, since it creates more resource-consuming households with fewer people in them. According to ecologist Jianguo Liu, "Divorced households spent more per person per month for electricity, compared with a married household, as multiple people can be watching the same television, listening to the same radio, cooking on the same stove and or eating under the same lights. That means some $6.9 billion in extra utility costs per year, Liu calculated, in addition to the extra $3.6 billion for water, plus the other costs such as land use. "
