I know I've read too much Freudian literary criticism...

... but Book 5 of the Harry Potter series is cracking me up. (I am hastily trying to read Books 5-7 in time for a book club.)

As the book opens, Harry is having trouble not using his wand in the "Muggle" world:

... as though Harry had been waiting for this signal, he jumped to his feet, at the same time pulling from the waistband of his jeans a thin wooden wand as if he were unsheathing a sword.... "Put--it--away!" Uncle Vernon snarled into Harry's ear. "Now! Before--anyone--sees!".... Harry stuffed his wand hastily back into his jeans and tried to look innocent.

and

"Think you're a big man carrying that thing, don't you?" Dudley asked after a few seconds.
"What thing?"
"That--that thing you're hiding."

and

A silvery wisp of vapor shot from the tip of the wand and the dementor slowed, but the spell hadn't worked properly....Another wisp of silver smoke, feebler than the last, drifted from the wand--he couldn't do it any more, he couldn't work the spell--...."EXCEPTO PATRONUM!" An enormous silver stag erupted from the tip of Harry's wand...."

Poor Harry Potter, struggling to control his wand and keep it in his pants....
