Here is the list of the 50 most significant comedy films of all time, as selected by Bob McCabe, author of The Rough Guide to Comedy Movies. As per the meme started by John Scalzi and passed on by Ben at Open Switch, I'm going to bold the ones I've seen. You're also supposed to asterisk the ones you own, but I don't own any of them. A few things I've learned from this list: 1) I've seen more comedies than I thought. Who knew I've seen more than a third of the best comedies? 2) I remember virtually none of them. I don't know if it's comedies in general or movies in particular, but most of these films are a blur in my mind.
Some movies I'd add to this list: What's Up Doc (hilarious slapstick with Barbara Streisand) and Desk Set (another Tracy/Hepburn combo).

it should also be noted that i, who live in the same household, own a few of them. i also could have sworn i made tess watch the general (that's the buster keaton one with the trains: did i really not make you watch that?).
not only do i remember more about these than tess does, i can quote from many of them. this kind of difference seems to be at least slightly gender related.
then again, maybe i'm just a prevert.

I fully expected you to claim I had seen movies that I didn't remember seeing. The only reason I remember Withnail and I is because it has a funny name and you talked about it a lot. (Something to do with Dr. Who, I think.)
I have no memory of Buster Keaton.
Which ones do you/we own?
Ones you haven't seen that I HIGHLY recommend: Toy Story, Groundhog Day, and Some Like it Hot. And then go watch Clue and The Princess Bride as well. :)
